Night Light | Minecraft Mayhem

Reed of the Week

A few weeks ago, Mojang rolled out new guidelines that are affecting Minecraft creators in a big way. Among them are stricter rules for Minecraft servers, the use of the word “Minecraft” in the title of YouTube videos, and limiting the company’s assets in marketing and events.

I get that Mojang and Minecraft want more control over their own property, but the new guidelines are going to make it harder for creators in this space to make a living. Profitable servers that took years to build are now being forced to change or risk being shut down. I think these changes go against why Minecraft became the world’s most popular sandbox game in the first place - user generated content. The stories, maps, and merchandise that creators have made over the years are a massive reason for the game’s widespread success. I’d encourage Mojang (and Microsoft) to think about how critical the Minecraft player-base has been to the success of their company.

The community seems one-sided on this one, It’ll be interesting to see how this develops in the next few weeks.
