Athletes are Embracing Social Media

If you’re watching golf right now, you know how electric Bryson DeChambeau’s performance was at Pinehurst. Athletes, in general, are starting to embrace content creation as a full-time job. I think there’s something special about social media, which allows you to show off your true self (not dictated by traditional media). In this Night Light, we’re talking about “The People’s Champ.”

What sets Bryson apart from all the others who have tried it before him?

The one constant that I’ve noticed with athletes and celebrities coming into the YouTube realm is that they’re never consistent. They post for 2-3 months and never again; or they post a video one month and then three months later. Most athletes don’t give it enough time to build consistency. Bryson is posting videos every single week or month, and he’s been doing it for a sustained period of time.

His content is consistent, relatable, and you can tell how passionate he is about the game of golf. You also get to see a side of Bryson’s personality that you didn’t get to see from traditional media.

1️⃣ Consistency

Bryson has been posting on social media for a long time now, but in the last three years, he’s really ramped up vertical videos, a YouTube channel, and a TikTok account. Just this year, he’s already put out 21 videos (half have been collabs with other creators). Remember, he’s a golfer first; content creation is his second full-time job. I say full-time job because being a content creator is a full-time job, just like being an athlete is. I don’t think most athletes understand how much time and effort it takes to build the audience that he’s built over the last several years.

Bryson is “The People’s Champ.” You’ll find comments like this all over his social media…

A year ago, I think people had a very different opinion of Bryson. Since then, the perception of Bryson has done a complete 180. Even my friends who were not Bryson fans have contacted me over the last couple of months, saying they’ve enjoyed watching Bryson’s YouTube content and now cheer for him on weekends.

3️⃣ Passion for Making Content

In my first meeting with Bryson, I asked him, “Why on earth would you want to make YouTube content?” His answer was all about growing the game of golf, having a deep passion for it, wanting to encourage young kids to play, and showing off his true personality that wasn’t portrayed in the media.

It’s not just golf…

Just like what Bryson is doing for golf, I think Nick Kyrgios and Naomi Osaka are doing for tennis. They’ve sat down with Mike Tyson, Gordon Ramsay, and even Rainn Wilson. I think we’re seeing a clear trend where we can tell which athletes are passionate about the content they create.

There’s never been a better time to create content as an athlete. It’s not for everyone, but the athletes that enjoy the content they make and stay consistent with it are going to be the ones who reap all the benefits.
