Why Should You Care About Roblox Right Now?

There are a few topics I always find myself coming back to every now and then. Roblox is one of them. It’s been trending upward for a while now, celebrating its 6 billionth account earlier in May of this year. However, It’s been in the headlines recently for a few reasons that I think everyone should be paying close attention to. Daily active users continue to increase quarter over quarter.

1. Shopify is Partnering with Roblox

Soon, you’re going to be able to shop physical products (clothing, accessories, and collectibles) within of Roblox. I think this is huge news for two reasons, the first is that if you’re a creator or brand already on Shopify, you now have a seamless way to sell directly on Roblox. Second, if you’re a popular dev or creator on Roblox, you now have a whole new marketplace to sell products.

Here’s how it’s going to work: Robloxs users will see a “Buy Now” button next to virtual products like a hat or hoodie. When you click the button it will take you to a product page where you can select the size and purchase that item in real life. Walmart has already been testing out e-commerce within Roblox, I expect more retailers to do the same in the upcoming months.

Earlier this year you could apply to be a co-worker in the Ikea experience.

The integration should be available early 2025.

2. Fashion is Being Defined on Roblox

I think part of the reason I’m writing about Roblox this week is because of how well these recent developments on the platform synergize with one another. If you haven’t heard of Dress to Impress on Roblox, get out from your rock and listen up. Dress to Impress is basically America’s Next Top Model, you design an outfit based on a theme, and everyone else votes on which one wins the round.

Caseoh is almost too good…

It’s one of the most popular games on the platform, with 330K concurrent players and 2.4B visits. It’s also incredibly popular to stream—both Kai Cenat and Caseoh have played it on stream several times and have a surprising number of first place finishes. The game is fun, but I think what’s more interesting is considering who is playing on Roblox. Some channels (like Leah Ashe) are almost entirely dedicated to the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if future designers are playing this game now.

3. Roblox is Sharing More Revenue With Creators

Roblox creators and devs are now going to keep between 50 and 70 percent of revenue generated from paid titles (up from 30 percent split devs get for purchases made with Robux). I think part of the reason they’re doing this is they know how many users are playing experiences made by devs and community members. Some of these games don’t even look like Roblox at all.

A lot of these top games don’t even look like Roblox anymore, also seeing a trend of anime inspired games.

It makes sense to shift the attention here because, over the last year, the fastest-growing demographic of Roblox users has been between 17-24 years old. This same generation is also spending their money in 3 key areas: electronics, health and wellness, and —you guessed it—fashion.

The Big Takeaway:

Roblox has been making changes to its platform that you shouldn’t ignore. They’re becoming the next e-commerce moguls, tastemakers, and place to game for Gen Z. It’s only a matter of time before you see someone walking around with clothing that was designed, promoted, and purchased entirely within Roblox.
